What’s it about!
The film is set in 1989 at Ranasthali in Srikakulam district. Bhagat (Nara Rohith) is an idealistic youngster who aspires to become IPS officer, as he believes that only justice can be brought through ‘legal system’. His father is a Naxalite leader but ‘retires’ from the movement to spend time with his son. One day, Bhagat happens to see newly wed woman (Vedika) sitting at Railway Station alone and he comes to know from her that her in-laws sent her away to bring dowry. On the same day, her father dies, her in-laws reject her, and so he brings her to his home. Soon a local rowdy eyes on her that makes Bhagat to fight with him. In the melee, the rowdy dies and Bhagat goes to jail. On the other hand, several police offices try to contain the activities of the rowdy’s boss, Patnaik (Ranadheer), but couldn’t do so. How our hero Bhagat does it being within the ‘system’ forms the rest of the story.

Analysis

Banam is a sensible movie. Niche audiences who like films with different approach and offbeat stories can like it. Although it starts off pretty promisingly and sets you up rather well, it fails to continue the same till the end. Debutant director Chaitanya should be commended for treading off the beaten track in narrating the movie and in selecting the story. Despite snail pace of the movie, first half arrests you and intrigues you. The director has tried to bring certain stylized depiction of heroism and scenes.

Climax scenes are pretty ordinary. The film is essentially about an idealistic guy who wants to cleanse the system. Question is: why should the film happen in 1989? What is so important about that period? Was it Naxalism? Even hero employing four police officers under training to cleanse the system is not told in convincing manner. Other than these faults, the film on the whole is sensible and a very good attempt. Nara Rohith’s look and his acting skills, some good locales, first half of the movie are interesting part of the film.

Performances

Nara Rohith, son of former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s brother, makes a very confident debut. He has good looks and his subtle acting (is it deliberate) is very impressive. At a time, all star sons and newcomers are debuting with a commercial film; Nara Rohith should be commended for choosing this offbeat film. Like Abhay Deol in Bollywood, he can be good choice for certain roles. He looks promising. Dialogue delivery is his strength.

Vedika in a Brahmin girl is okay. Looks like her role is created to show off hero’s idealistic nature than weaving a romantic thread. Shayaji Shinde’s role of a former Naxalite is poorly etched. Other actors are okay. Ranadhir as main villain does justice to his role

Technically, the film is very nice. Cinematography by Anil Bhandari (is he the same cameraman who did the shabby Mallepuvvu?) is excellent. The locales they have chosen (near Bobbili and Pollachi) also have brought freshness on to the screen. Dialogues by Gandham Nagaraju (of Gamyam fame) are poetic.

Art director has succeeded in recreating 80’s look. Even the director has intelligently created scenes like Shiva cycle chain scene, and a theatre showing Geetanjali film, to depict that period.

After a long time, Manisharma has given good music especially his background score is splendid. The song, Kadile Padam , has good lyrical value (Vanamali.). It is nice that debutant director Chaitanya Dantaloori has brought some realism into Telugu films at a time Tollywood increasingly falling into the trap of masala movies. He definitely seems to have innovative ideas but he needs to put it in more channelised way. His shot making style resembles to RGV’s. Though he lost his grip in the climax scenes, as a director he looks a promising talent. Producer Seshu Priyanka has good taste.

Bottom-line!

Banam is an offbeat film with sensible approach. Although it has its faults, it should be appreciated for attempting such films. Nara Rohith and director Chaitanya look promising. The film might be liked by niche audiences.

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy: His father's Son

Article from TS Sudir (NDTV):it was a hot April afternoon deep inside the countryside of Pulivendula in Kadapa district. I was travelling with Y S Jaganmohan Reddy as he campaigned for himself for the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat and for dad YSR for Pulivendula assembly constituency. The YSR family, particularly Jagan's grandfather, the late Y S Raja Reddy, was said to have been a terror in these parts. So I was a little surprised to see so many youth fearlessly approach Jagan to tell him their problems. Some making a request, others demanding, angry.

"Paike ra", which means "come up" (to my vehicle) was a standard Jagan response that stayed with me that day. Anyone with a problem would be asked in colloquial Rayalaseema Telugu to climb on to his vehicle and there Jagan would give him a hug, cup his cheeks in his hands and promise that his concerns will be taken care of. Was this an act for the camera or a 36-year-old politician, fighting his first election, genuinely trying to reach out, I wondered.

The gesture of hugging, holding hands to connect with the people he meets, comes naturally to Jagan. That was also our experience when I and Uma met Jagan this week to offer our condolences. As I saw Jagan meet the young and old, men and women, who came to meet him, he conveyed a lot through his body language. If it is an act he has perfected, he must be a very good actor.

When was the last you saw YSR, I asked. "At the breakfast table that morning," he said. "I do not eat breakfast but I was with him while he ate." Jagan looked down, almost as if remembering YSR munching his favourite salads. Over one such breakfast during the election campaign in April, YSR had told me :"I always eat a heavy breakfast. And salads are good for health. They add fibre." The doctor in YSR knew what was good for YSR, the chief minister with a demanding schedule.

"I will fulfil his last wish. He spoke just a week back about winning 41 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats in 2014," said Jagan. His voice quivered but his fist was clenched. It was clear he wants to channelise his personal loss into a political weapon.

"I want to restart the 'Rachabanda' programme, that was so dear to my dad. "YSR died when he was travelling to Chittoor for the 'Rachabanda' programme, that involved making surprise visits to villages and knowing from villagers firsthand what they thought of government schemes and evolving ways to improve the delivery mechanism.

"You should in fact, go to the same Anupalle village where YSR was headed that day so that it shows there is continuity," I suggested.

"Yes, I will. There is so much work that my dad began that I want to finish."

But all these are plans. Jagan's dreams. Whether he undertakes that 600 km journey from Hyderabad to Anupalle will depend on Sonia Gandhi. And so far, as I write this, selective leaks from Delhi indicate Jagan will not be made CM. Atleast not yet. Officially, there is a deafening silence from 10, Janpath. Meanwhile, chief minister K Rosaiah goes about business as usual and there is no word on the CLP meeting. He does not say it in so many words, but the suspense is frustrating Jagan.

"How can the high command ignore Jagan when he has the support of 152 out of 154 Congress MLAs," asks one of his very close aides. "Was YSR not one of Sonia Gandhi's most trusted and dependable men? Why shouldn't Jagan get a chance?" they argue.

It is perhaps this belligerent attitude that has spoilt Jagan's case. He is being seen as a young man, too much in a hurry. Accused of assuming what was dad's was automatically his. To climb the ladder in the Congress, you need subtle and forceful canvassing. Not the very vocal and the threatening kind.

Those who were trumpeting Jagan's cause, in their overenthusiasm, ended up creating a commotion. So the right noises were not heard in the right places. Instead those who were working against him managed to plant anti-Jagan stories more effectively, portraying him as a businessman who made his millions while his dad was ruling Andhra.

Several SMSes are doing the rounds. One of them sent to me reads like this : "The Bellary brothers - saffron in Karnataka and secular in AP run the largest mining company with YSR's son as their partner. Vast illegal mining and criminal trespass into areas deemed inviolate. They support Yeddurappa and Jagan Reddy as CM candidates."

"Will he accept a ministry at the Centre?"

His close aides say 'no'. Jagan also knows it is now or perhaps never. "It is here that I will be and perform," he indicates pressing the sofa with his index finger.

But to make a mark in the city of the Charminar, you need powerful and influential friends in the city of the Qutab Minar. Jagan's camp admits he does not have friends in Delhi who can project him as a man who can hold his own, be a befitting son to his father in the eyes of the Congress leadership.

This blog is not an attempt to make a case for Jagan. Nor a justification for how Jagan made his money or built his media empire. But then no one is naive enough to think that politics and money do not have an umblical connection. Sadly, it has virtually become a universal truth that need not be stated any more.

I must also clarify that I have nothing against K Rosaiah. In fact, I have known Mr Rosaiah for much longer and admire him as one of the most experienced politicians, who by the sheer weight of the years he has spent as minister with five chief ministers, would easily qualify to sit in the chief minister's chair.

Jagan's supporters have created an awkard situation presumably for him as well as for Sonia Gandhi. She may not want to put the 36-year-old on the CM's chair because of her apprehensions relating to his temperament, his ability to take on an aggressive Chandrababu Naidu, his connections with business lobbies and of course, lack of administrative and political experience. Yet, ignoring the majority opinion of the MLAs would be to the negate the spirit of a chief minister being elected by a majority of his legislators.

Efforts, I am told, are on to rein in the MPs and the MLAs and ask them to stop their Jagan bhajan. And the more the Congress leadership drags its feet on the CM issue, the more Jagan's support base may erode.

If Sonia finally vetoes Jagan's candidature and decides to maintain status quo, the situation will be similar to what happened in the case of another Telugu bidda, the late P.V.Narasimha Rao. Like PV in 1991, Rosaiah also opted out of electoral politics this time due to health reasons and became a MLC. And like PV became PM, Rosaiah got the top job in Andhra. But he may have to read the riot act if his ministers act truant or worse, openly defy his authority. Being a Vysya in a Reddy-dominated party would be another headache he will have to deal with. His best bet would be to make a point with his administrative abilities.

Jaipal Reddy has reportedly ruled himself out of the race. In any case, he is seen as a member of the Dilli Durbar who does not know the recipe to prepare Hyderabadi biryani. PCC chief D Srinivas and Renuka Chowdhary count themselves out by virtue of having lost the elections in 2009.

NTR's daughter Purandareswari could emerge as the dark horse, with a helpful nod from Rahul Gandhi. The argument being put forth that Chandrababu Naidu would find it difficult to attack his sister-in-law. Huh? Naidu who dethroned his pa-in-law in a palace coup, isn't likely to hold back any punches for NTR's daughter, particularly if he is smelling power. Moreover, being a Kamma CM in a CLP that has just four Kamma Congress MLAs would mean the caste equation will be ranged against Purandareswari. Yes, Andhra could get its first woman chief minister. That will certainly be some achievement.

In the late 80s and early 90s, YSR was always seen as a rebel within the state Congress when the party was ruled by the likes of PV Narasimha Rao, Kotla Vijaybhaskara Reddy and N Janardhan Reddy. It needed the PV era to end and Sonia to take over for YSR to emerge as the tallest leader from the Deccan. Will a negative reply turn Jagan into YSR part 2? That's a risk the Congress cannot afford to take.

Like his parents, Jagan too is deeply religious. "God is on our side. Now even dad is with him up there," he says.

The young man knows it is this time or perhaps never. He wants to come up now. "Paike ra" is really the slogan for this cub from Kadapa.

No Josh in Collections

Although, it is expected to be a big super hit film for Naga Chaitanya , film Josh is going average since its release. The timing of the release of the film makes a lot of difference for the revenue of the film. The film was released on the very next day of the cremation of late Chief Minister. The sudden death of Dr.Y.S.R. Reddy and its impact on the people resulted in the poor revenue of the film Josh The first week collections in Nizam Territory crosses Rs.2 Crore mark, which is said to be a poor returns for much hyped film like Josh.

Probably, the film may improve its status during the coming weeks, as the people gradually coming out of shock, and looking forward for the entertainment. And, there is festive session ahead which may ensure the film of good revenue

Is Nannapaneni jumping into Congress?

TDP firebrand leader Nannapaneni Rajakumari who feel being neglected by the high command since last few months, seems to be making a move towards Congress party. She has been in regular contact with several senior congress leaders. She demanded that, DGP S.S.Yadav should be suspended for the failure of giving security to late Chief Minister Dr. Rajashekar Reddy. She said that, when a person like Chief Minister is ready to board a helicopter, DGP S.S.Yadav not even bothered to ensure the safety of the Chief Minister. His negligence in providing security to YSR family during performing the final rituals was also clearly visible. Moreover, he failed to arrange a 21 gun salute to the departed leader, which was supposed to be done by his men. She condemned the negligence shown by him towards YSR family.
Rajakumari not only demands for the suspension of DGP, but also said to be supporting Y.S.Jagan candidature for Chief Minister Post. Though, none from the TDP raised voice in support of Y.S.Jagan, she is the first person to do it?

48 MLAs dropped from Congress list

HYDERABAD: The Congress party made a head-start over other major political parties on Saturday when the All India Congress Committee (AICC) released a list of its candidates for 290 Assembly and all 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh.

There are 90 new faces among the party’s nominees for the Assembly and 15 in the list of Lok Sabha candidates in tune with the party’s declared policy to encourage youth.

Many of these freshers are young, though some are the wards of seasoned politicians such as Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and CWC G. Venkatswamy.

The party dropped as many as 48 MLAs, including three Ministers and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, G. Kutuhalamma, besides Hindupur MP Col. Nizamuddin. The Ministers are Koneru Ranga Rao, Gollapalli Surya Rao and M. Hanumantha Rao, the former two belonging to the Scheduled Castes while the latter hailing from the Backward Classes.

The party is yet to announce the candidates for Rajahmundry Rural, Dubbak, Khammam and Miryalguda. Minister Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao’s candidature from Rajahmundry Rural is yet to be finalised.

Prominent among the Lok Sabha candidates are the Chief Minister’s son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy (Kadapa) while all the Union Ministers – S. Jaipal Reddy (Chevella), Renuka Chowdary (Khammam), Panabaka Lakshmi (Bapatla SC), M.M. Pallam Raju (Kakinada) and Daggubati Purandeswari (Visakhapatnam) have been retained, though from some new constituencies. Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy (Pulivendula) leads the list of Assembly candidates which includes APCC president D. Srinivas (Nizamabad Urban), Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy (shifted from Balkonda to Armoor).

Koneru Ranga Rao, a senior Minister, was dropped as he sought the ticket for his daughter, a proposal that was not accepted by the leadership. Two of Chief Minister’s bitter critics – G. V. Harsha Kumar (Amalapuram-SC) and Madhu Yaskhi (Nizamabad) have been re-nominated to the Lok Sabha.

An analysis of the Assembly list shows that the party has given representation to 153 candidates belonging to the Backward Classes (66), SCs (48), STs (19) and minorities (16). Among the rest, Reddys have been given the lion’s share of 87 seats, followed by Kammas (16) and Kapus (15). Similarly, in the list of Lok Sabha nominees, 24 belong to the weaker sections and minorities and 18 to the other castes.

Jade Goody in last hours of her life

London, March 15 (ANI): Cancer-stricken Jade Goody has just few hours to live now, according to her pals.

The British reality TV star has been in tremendous pain after cervical cancer spread to her entire body.

“It IS now a matter of hours, she has deteriorated dramatically overnight. Sadly she is very close to the end,” News of the World quoted a source as saying.

The 27-year-old was granted her last wish after doctors allowed her to go home so that she could spend her final days with her beloved sons, Bobby, five, and Freddie, four.

Goody had recently returned from London’s Royal Marsden Hospital to her house in Upshire, Essex, where she suffered excruciating pain that led officials to lift the curfew on her jailbird hubby Jack Tweed so that he could spend time with his terminally ill wife.

Tweed said: “When I got the call I was absolutely terrified. The thought that our fairytale could be over already filled me with dread and sadness.”

And now, family and close friends have come together to be with Goody, who is “terrified of falling asleep because she’s afraid she’ll never wake up”.

Her rep Max Clifford confirmed: “She has deteriorated. She is very weak. The answer is, who knows? We are on the edge of a precipice.” (ANI)

Azharuddin may Contest on KCR

HYDERABAD: If the Congress plans fructify, Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Praja Rajyam chief K. Chiranjeevi may have to take on former cricketer Mohd. Azharuddin and actor Jeevita, respectively, and not seasoned politicians. The party leadership has not ruled out springing a few more surprises by fielding film personalities, former cricketers and several influential leaders belonging to weaker sections.

It is seriously considering fielding Ms. Jeevita against ‘megastar’ Chiranjeevi. “The idea is to pin him down to one constituency and woo the sizable number of women voters to back Ms. Jeevita,” a senior party leader explained. In a related development, Ms. Jeevita called on Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday.

Azhar’s chances good

With senior leaders reluctant to fight Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao from the Medak Lok Sabha constituency, the party may field Mr Azharuddin. Leaders feel he could garner considerable Muslim votes besides wooing cricket-crazy youth in the rural areas.

If not Medak, he may enter the fray from Nizamabad or Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency.

The party may not hesitate to field him from Mahabubnagar Assembly constituency, which has 56,574 Muslim voters of the total electorate of 2.4 lakh.

Senior party leaders feel Jayasudha could be the right choice for the Secunderabad Assembly seat due to the sizable Christian population. AP Cultural Council chairman Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam may get the nod to test the waters from Musheerabad constituency having a lot of Brahmin votes.

Actor G. Krishna’s brother and producer G. Adiseshagiri Rao, who is APCC general secretary, may get Guntur Lok Sabha seat or one of the Assembly segments in Guntur district -- Vinukonda, Ponnur or Tenali.

Worried over the MRPS virtually declaring war on the party, Congress leaders are desperate to woo leaders like BC Welfare Association president R. Krishnaiah, Kasani Gnaneswar, expelled BSP leader Nalla Surya Prakash and Naragoni, who differed with the Praja Rajyam leaders and has floated his own outfit.

It may not be a surprise if some of them get Lok Sabha or Assembly tickets.

Naidu offers Colour tv's and Cash for Poor as part of Election Manifesto

As elections near, politicians start showering sops even if it is a time of recession. Ahead of elections, TDP president Chandrababu Naidu is promising every needy family in Andhra Pradesh a colour television, complete with cable connection.

"We are offering colour TV to all poor people and also middle class. In the villages, there is only one entertainment, TV channel, and most poor people are not having colour TV," he said.

By announcing this, Naidu wants to do a Karunanidhi. The man once famous for wielding the mouse and laptop now wants to use TV as the remote control to open the electoral vote-bank.

He is also promising a very ambitious cash transfer scheme by which very needy families are to get a direct cash transfer of Rs 2000 per month, less needy families will get Rs 1500 and the middle class Rs 1000. Defending the move, Naidu says the extra bill of Rs 18,000 crore to exchequer owing to the scheme is 'manageable'.

"I am asking Chandrababu Naidu, how do you meet this expenditure? Where are you going to get the money from? Earlier you said these things are disastrous," Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister K Rosaiah said.

So, if you are a voter in Andhra Pradesh and are planning to buy a colour TV set today, it is better you put off the purchase till May 16.

US consulate in Hyderabad starts Operations

Hyderabad, March 5: Five months after it was inaugurated, the US consulate here has started visa services, fulfilling a long pending demand of visa seekers from Andhra Pradesh and boosting Hyderabad's image as an international business destination.

The consulate started partial functioning Wednesday, taking over 20 percent of the work being handled by the US consulate in Chennai.

Functioning from Paigah Palace, a heritage building in Begumpet near the old airport, the consulate will initially conduct 100 visa interviews a day. The number of daily visa applications will be increased to 400 next month.

The US consulate in Chennai is presently handling 500 applications every day for visas from Andhra Pradesh.

Consul General Cornelis M.Keur said full consular services for US citizens would also be available in Hyderabad, according to a statement issued late Wednesday.

Officials said the opening of the facility would save 70,000 trips from Hyderabad and other parts of Andhra Pradesh every year to Chennai.

US Ambassador to India David C.Mulford had formally inaugurated the consulate, the fourth in India after Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.

Then US president George W. Bush, during his visit to Hyderabad in March 2006, had announced the setting up of the consulate.

"When we selected Hyderabad to be the host city to our new consulate general, we did so in clear recognition of its importance as a major social political and commercial centre. Hyderabad is a city that works," Mulford had said.

The US consulate, which will initially have 16 visa windows, will work out of the temporary facility for six years before moving into a proposed permanent facility to be built in Gacchibowli area at a cost of $60 million.

The state government has allotted 12 acres of land for the consulate in Gacchibowli, an area where several US giants including Microsoft have their campuses.

Out of about two million Americans of Indian origin, an estimated 400,000 hail from Andhra Pradesh.

Expressing anxiety over the increase in unemployment, the party leaders said the PRP had decided to create and fill up 10 lakh government jobs. They said the SEZs which were set up by snatching the lands of the poor would be cancelled. Stating that the draft manifesto was yet to be finalized, the two leaders said that they would invite the opinions of the people on the proposals.
