48 MLAs dropped from Congress list
HYDERABAD: The Congress party made a head-start over other major political parties on Saturday when the All India Congress Committee (AICC) released a list of its candidates for 290 Assembly and all 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh.
There are 90 new faces among the party’s nominees for the Assembly and 15 in the list of Lok Sabha candidates in tune with the party’s declared policy to encourage youth.
Many of these freshers are young, though some are the wards of seasoned politicians such as Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and CWC G. Venkatswamy.
The party dropped as many as 48 MLAs, including three Ministers and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, G. Kutuhalamma, besides Hindupur MP Col. Nizamuddin. The Ministers are Koneru Ranga Rao, Gollapalli Surya Rao and M. Hanumantha Rao, the former two belonging to the Scheduled Castes while the latter hailing from the Backward Classes.
The party is yet to announce the candidates for Rajahmundry Rural, Dubbak, Khammam and Miryalguda. Minister Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao’s candidature from Rajahmundry Rural is yet to be finalised.
Prominent among the Lok Sabha candidates are the Chief Minister’s son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy (Kadapa) while all the Union Ministers – S. Jaipal Reddy (Chevella), Renuka Chowdary (Khammam), Panabaka Lakshmi (Bapatla SC), M.M. Pallam Raju (Kakinada) and Daggubati Purandeswari (Visakhapatnam) have been retained, though from some new constituencies. Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy (Pulivendula) leads the list of Assembly candidates which includes APCC president D. Srinivas (Nizamabad Urban), Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy (shifted from Balkonda to Armoor).
Koneru Ranga Rao, a senior Minister, was dropped as he sought the ticket for his daughter, a proposal that was not accepted by the leadership. Two of Chief Minister’s bitter critics – G. V. Harsha Kumar (Amalapuram-SC) and Madhu Yaskhi (Nizamabad) have been re-nominated to the Lok Sabha.
An analysis of the Assembly list shows that the party has given representation to 153 candidates belonging to the Backward Classes (66), SCs (48), STs (19) and minorities (16). Among the rest, Reddys have been given the lion’s share of 87 seats, followed by Kammas (16) and Kapus (15). Similarly, in the list of Lok Sabha nominees, 24 belong to the weaker sections and minorities and 18 to the other castes.

Jade Goody in last hours of her life
London, March 15 (ANI): Cancer-stricken Jade Goody has just few hours to live now, according to her pals.
The British reality TV star has been in tremendous pain after cervical cancer spread to her entire body.
“It IS now a matter of hours, she has deteriorated dramatically overnight. Sadly she is very close to the end,” News of the World quoted a source as saying.
The 27-year-old was granted her last wish after doctors allowed her to go home so that she could spend her final days with her beloved sons, Bobby, five, and Freddie, four.
Goody had recently returned from London’s Royal Marsden Hospital to her house in Upshire, Essex, where she suffered excruciating pain that led officials to lift the curfew on her jailbird hubby Jack Tweed so that he could spend time with his terminally ill wife.
Tweed said: “When I got the call I was absolutely terrified. The thought that our fairytale could be over already filled me with dread and sadness.”
And now, family and close friends have come together to be with Goody, who is “terrified of falling asleep because she’s afraid she’ll never wake up”.
Her rep Max Clifford confirmed: “She has deteriorated. She is very weak. The answer is, who knows? We are on the edge of a precipice.” (ANI)

Azharuddin may Contest on KCR
HYDERABAD: If the Congress plans fructify, Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Praja Rajyam chief K. Chiranjeevi may have to take on former cricketer Mohd. Azharuddin and actor Jeevita, respectively, and not seasoned politicians. The party leadership has not ruled out springing a few more surprises by fielding film personalities, former cricketers and several influential leaders belonging to weaker sections.
It is seriously considering fielding Ms. Jeevita against ‘megastar’ Chiranjeevi. “The idea is to pin him down to one constituency and woo the sizable number of women voters to back Ms. Jeevita,” a senior party leader explained. In a related development, Ms. Jeevita called on Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday.
Azhar’s chances good
With senior leaders reluctant to fight Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao from the Medak Lok Sabha constituency, the party may field Mr Azharuddin. Leaders feel he could garner considerable Muslim votes besides wooing cricket-crazy youth in the rural areas.
If not Medak, he may enter the fray from Nizamabad or Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency.
The party may not hesitate to field him from Mahabubnagar Assembly constituency, which has 56,574 Muslim voters of the total electorate of 2.4 lakh.
Senior party leaders feel Jayasudha could be the right choice for the Secunderabad Assembly seat due to the sizable Christian population. AP Cultural Council chairman Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam may get the nod to test the waters from Musheerabad constituency having a lot of Brahmin votes.
Actor G. Krishna’s brother and producer G. Adiseshagiri Rao, who is APCC general secretary, may get Guntur Lok Sabha seat or one of the Assembly segments in Guntur district -- Vinukonda, Ponnur or Tenali.
Worried over the MRPS virtually declaring war on the party, Congress leaders are desperate to woo leaders like BC Welfare Association president R. Krishnaiah, Kasani Gnaneswar, expelled BSP leader Nalla Surya Prakash and Naragoni, who differed with the Praja Rajyam leaders and has floated his own outfit.
It may not be a surprise if some of them get Lok Sabha or Assembly tickets.

Naidu offers Colour tv's and Cash for Poor as part of Election Manifesto
As elections near, politicians start showering sops even if it is a time of recession. Ahead of elections, TDP president Chandrababu Naidu is promising every needy family in Andhra Pradesh a colour television, complete with cable connection.
"We are offering colour TV to all poor people and also middle class. In the villages, there is only one entertainment, TV channel, and most poor people are not having colour TV," he said.
By announcing this, Naidu wants to do a Karunanidhi. The man once famous for wielding the mouse and laptop now wants to use TV as the remote control to open the electoral vote-bank.
He is also promising a very ambitious cash transfer scheme by which very needy families are to get a direct cash transfer of Rs 2000 per month, less needy families will get Rs 1500 and the middle class Rs 1000. Defending the move, Naidu says the extra bill of Rs 18,000 crore to exchequer owing to the scheme is 'manageable'.
"I am asking Chandrababu Naidu, how do you meet this expenditure? Where are you going to get the money from? Earlier you said these things are disastrous," Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister K Rosaiah said.
So, if you are a voter in Andhra Pradesh and are planning to buy a colour TV set today, it is better you put off the purchase till May 16.

US consulate in Hyderabad starts Operations
Hyderabad, March 5: Five months after it was inaugurated, the US consulate here has started visa services, fulfilling a long pending demand of visa seekers from Andhra Pradesh and boosting Hyderabad's image as an international business destination.
The consulate started partial functioning Wednesday, taking over 20 percent of the work being handled by the US consulate in Chennai.
Functioning from Paigah Palace, a heritage building in Begumpet near the old airport, the consulate will initially conduct 100 visa interviews a day. The number of daily visa applications will be increased to 400 next month.
The US consulate in Chennai is presently handling 500 applications every day for visas from Andhra Pradesh.
Consul General Cornelis M.Keur said full consular services for US citizens would also be available in Hyderabad, according to a statement issued late Wednesday.
Officials said the opening of the facility would save 70,000 trips from Hyderabad and other parts of Andhra Pradesh every year to Chennai.
US Ambassador to India David C.Mulford had formally inaugurated the consulate, the fourth in India after Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.
Then US president George W. Bush, during his visit to Hyderabad in March 2006, had announced the setting up of the consulate.
"When we selected Hyderabad to be the host city to our new consulate general, we did so in clear recognition of its importance as a major social political and commercial centre. Hyderabad is a city that works," Mulford had said.
The US consulate, which will initially have 16 visa windows, will work out of the temporary facility for six years before moving into a proposed permanent facility to be built in Gacchibowli area at a cost of $60 million.
The state government has allotted 12 acres of land for the consulate in Gacchibowli, an area where several US giants including Microsoft have their campuses.
Out of about two million Americans of Indian origin, an estimated 400,000 hail from Andhra Pradesh.
