Cousin confesses to Swetha's murder

Hyderabad Feb1 : N Shekhar Reddy, the prime suspect in degree student G Swetha Reddy's murder case, on Friday confessed to the crime. At a press
conference called by Cyberabad police commissioner S Prabhakar Reddy, the youth narrated the incidents leading up to the gruesome murder of his cousin.

Shekhar Reddy, 30, a supervisor with a contractor of Sohan Constructions at Karmanghat, used to frequently visit Swetha Reddy's sister's house at Sri Nidhi Colony at Karmanghat. On January 27, Shekhar planned to visit Swetha's house when she was alone after her brother-in-law and sister had gone to their native place police said.

On the way, he bought beer and fried rice, and went to Swetha's house at 3.30 pm. While Shekhar was having beer and rice, Swetha went into the kitchen to prepare tea.

"While working in the construction company, I spent lavishly and ended up in debts. I knew Shweta's brother-in-law always kept cash at home and thought of stealing it to clear my debts of Rs 18,000," Shekhar Reddy told at the press conference.

To execute his plan, Shekhar walked into the kitchen with the empty beer bottle and smashed it on Swetha's head to render her unconscious. Swetha who suffered bleeding injuries started screaming for help. "Fearing that she might tell her sister and other relatives about his plans, I dragged her into the bedroom and smashed her head with a ceiling fan motor," Shekhar Reddy said.

However, after committing the offence, he fled from the house without stealing any valuables, police said.

Shekhar went to his room, changed his clothes and dumped the blood-stained clothes in the bushes near the Saroornagar tank.

"After that, I went to Malakpet and called my friend Rajiv Gandhi, a sales executive in a fertiliser company, and requested him to drop me at my native place in Mahbubnagar district on his two-wheeler. I told him that I suffered a cut on the hand in a scuffle with Swetha," Shekhar Reddy said.

However, according to Cyberabad commissioner Prabhakar Reddy, Rajiv Gandhi could not help Shekhar as the former had given his bike for servicing.

Shekhar then went to his relative's house in Balanagar, who advised him to surrender at the Nagarkurnool DSP office on Thursday.

The Cyberabad commissioner confirmed that Rajiv Gandhi was not involved in the case.
