Telugudesam ads trouble TV channels
Television channels which telecast Telugu Desam advertisements lampooning the state government have landed in a soup.
The principal Opposition party may also run into trouble over issuing the political advertisements without the approval of the State Election Commission.
The advertisements show an IAS officer, irrigation engineer, and a police constable complaining about the Congress government.
Saifabad police has issued notices to the channels asking them to explain the details of the characters shown in the advertisements and those who enacted them after the Congress legal cell leader, Mr Krishna Kumar Goud, filed a complaint.
`Mr Goud also filed a complaint in the court, which issued a notice to the TD president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Legal experts said that the notices would have an impact in the context of the Supreme Court judgment on advertisements of political nature.
In 2007, the EC issued orders to all chief electoral officers of the state and other election officials of the districts directing them to follow the Supreme Court order on political advertisements.
The SC order made it clear that all such advertisements should take prior clearance of the chief electoral officer.
But, the TD did not bother to seek the permission of the state’s chief electoral officer, Mr I.V. Subba Rao, before releasing the ads.
“This spells trouble for Mr Naidu as the SC orders are binding and applicable on all parties and all states,” said a senior advocate.
Television channels who aired the advertisement without checking whether it had been cleared by the Election Commission could also end up facing contempt of court charges.
